Introduction

'Critical Social Justice', as it is termed in the literature of one of its most prominent ideologues1, is now a cult that permeates our institutions. More recognizably, if arguably less accurately, it is often referred to as 'the cult of woke', 'wokeness' or 'woke-ism'. It is an authoritarian form of radical progressivism that uses deceptive linguistic Motte and Bailey fallacies to first present apparently non threatening and helpful interpretations of social and political phenomena as means to install itself and pursue its subversion. It is a stealth ideology. The published literature of the ideologues and the literature of the institutions that the ideology have captured (see usage examples at the bottom) reveal that words are repurposed so as to camouflage their ideological payload. The word's usual meaning can provide the easy to defend 'Motte' while the ideological definition is the indefensible 'Bailey' of a 'Motte and Bailey' fallacy, employed typically by 'useful idiots' 2 3 that are unaware they are disguising the actual ideological intent (see 'Exposing the Motte and Bailey' below Dictionary).

Motte Bailey
Woke /adjective
A state of awareness achieved by intellectually sensitive individuals who have empathy for the plight of others, especially those suffering injustice and oppression.
Woke /adjective
'Awake' to Western liberal society's invisible oppressive systems of power as prescribed by Critical Social Justice, and to the commitment needed to dismantle them;
inculcated with the CSJ ('woke-ist') worldview
;
compliant with
"critical consciousness".
Inclusive /adjective
Aiming to provide equal access to people who might otherwise be excluded;
not limited to certain people.
Inclusive /adjective
Censored or purged with the aim of providing access to people believed to be excluded by oppressive invisible systems of power;
intolerant of self expression or persons
possibly offensive to the "CSJ" viewpoint.

The ideology often pretends to speak to the very liberties it corrodes, dismantling centuries of rationalism, reason, Enlightenment insights and liberal principles. It continues to make more headway than anticipated by many that were aware of its atrocious ambitions. Something like a creeping Mao-ist cultural revolution is happening across the Anglo-sphere and the western world. Pretty much all institutions are partly or wholly captured by an expanding authoritarian ideology. Its tyrannically inclined ideologues are propelled by a conviction of their virtue because of the 'mission' the ideology asks of them to undertake. On one hand, they have a religious like devotion to prejudicial activism in a pursuit of a 'just' utopia. On the other hand, they are ideologically driven to willful ignorance of what can be objectively determined to be true. It is the deconstruction of reason, reasonableness and actual justice as a means to a delusional end.

What can be done? Much has been done to some avail, some to little. One thing of note is that the ideologues hate to have how they think seen clearly and exposed. So I've written this 'dictionary definition' version of James Lindsey's cyclopedic 'Translations from the Wokish' which I will be updating when possible and as necessary. I have concentrated on the most used words, it is not a complete compendium. The idea is to have a short a definition as is possible for each ideologically repurposed word. While this lacks analysis, it eases comprehension and is useful in the short form exposé typical of social media. The use of CSJ words within the definition is signified with double quotes (eg "privileged"). Signifiers like these are never used in text by activists. Thus the unaware, without negotiation, argument or even knowledge it has happened, are deceived into accepting the religious like assumptions, commitments and prejudices of the redefinitions below. Some usage examples contemporary to the time of writing are given at the bottom of the page, together with some revealing, context driven translations.

Exposing The Motte And Bailey

Shackel, Nicholas (2005). "The Vacuity of Postmodernist Methodology" (PDF).

Metaphilosophy. 36 (3): 295–320. doi:10.1111/j.1467-9973.2005.00370.x.

    A Motte and Bailey castle is a medieval system of defence in which a stone tower on a mound (the Motte) is surrounded by an area of land (the Bailey) which in turn is encompassed by some sort of a barrier such as a ditch. Being dark and dank, the Motte is not a habitation of choice. The only reason for its existence is the desirability of the Bailey, which the combination of the Motte and ditch makes relatively easy to retain despite attack by marauders. When only lightly pressed, the ditch makes small numbers of attackers easy to defeat as they struggle across it: when heavily pressed the ditch is not defensible and so neither is the Bailey. Rather one retreats to the insalubrious but defensible, perhaps impregnable, Motte. Eventually the marauders give up, when one is well placed to reoccupy desirable land.
    For my purposes the desirable but only lightly defensible territory of the Motte and Bailey castle, that is to say, the Bailey, represents a philosophical doctrine or position with similar properties: desirable to its proponent but only lightly defensible. The Motte is the defensible but undesired position to which one retreats when hard pressed.
[...]
    An entire doctrine or theory may be a Motte and Bailey Doctrine just by virtue of having a central core of defensible but not terribly interesting or original doctrines surrounded by a region of exciting but only lightly defensible doctrines. Just as the medieval Motte was often constructed by the stonemasons art from stone in the surrounding land, the Motte of dull but defensible doctrines is often constructed by the use of the sophists art from the desired but indefensible doctrines lying within the ditch.
    Diagnosis of a philosophical doctrine as being a Motte and Bailey Doctrine is invariably fatal. Once made it is relatively obvious to those familiar with the doctrine that the doctrine’s survival required a systematic vacillation between exploiting the desired territory and retreating to the Motte when pressed.
    The dialectic between many refutations of specific postmodernist doctrines and the postmodernist defences correspond exactly to the dynamics of Motte and Bailey Doctrines. When pressed with refutation the postmodernists retreat to their Mottes, only to venture out and repossess the desired territory when the refutation is not in immediate evidence. ...

Take the Motte, Bomb the Bailey

In dialectics where Critical Social Justice ideology is being inserted, the Motte is often constructed by those naive to the ideology. The naive do this by making a charitable interpretation of a CSJ proposal, unaware that in doing so, they have constructed the Motte. This is because being charitable is normal for civil discourse. Motte definitions therefore vary to a degree but usually the Bailey doctrine is somewhat 'camouflaged' because it is constructed from parts also used in the Motte's construction. Sometimes the Motte is constructed by supposing and presenting an existing definition, as in this example (2 minutes, starting at 1:28:44):

'Equity' Motte and Bailey exposed  (
2 min exert starts at 1:28:44)

Below I have given the kind of common constructions that are a Motte to the CSJ word doctrine Bailey.

Exposing the Motte and Bailey to an audience is an effective way of having it dismantled by them for themselves as explained in the essay extract above. To go further, or in a dialectic without an audience, the strategy likely to be effective against a Motte and Bailey is 'Motte charity and Bailey critique'; that is to take possession of the Motte (or at least its most defensible parts) as a reasonable person, and focus attention on the illiberal flaws of the Bailey; distractions and derailments away from the Bailey are inevitable but signifying they've been recognised helps re-rail the discourse onto the Bailey.

Usage Examples

All courses will be given three years to remove western enlightenment thinking and knowledge which is to be appended with other subject matter, particularly Critical Social Justice aligned material. Academics are required to ‘review their reading lists’ and provide ‘additional perspectives on the course subject’. New courses must explain ‘how the curriculum will address the principle of inculcating a commitment to activism against invisible systems of straight white male oppression, by replacing enlightenment derived knowledge with material aligned with Critical Social Justice doctrines’. This will be ‘a constant process… not a linear project with a definite end’. Meanwhile, the library has already set up a system for reporting ‘language to be modified or erased in catalogue records that potentially transgress the ideology's worldview’ and produced ‘a guide to sidelining or removing western objective, logical, rational or empirical texts from reading lists’, to be published at the start of the next academic year.

The reason for the purge is Aberdeen’s belief that ‘all British universities, all disciplines taught and researched in them have been historically influenced by a white supremacy and a concept of race to serve its interests’. So everything will be scrutinised for any suggestion that ‘particular perspectives, values and ideologies’ are ‘universal, superior, dominant, and complete’. That way of thinking, the document says, ‘renders invisible the historical and current role of people categorized by white people's concept of race in ‘the production of what white men have historically decided is true’. At the centre will be ‘students and staff from backgrounds historically affected by colonialism with interpretations of their personal experiences of disparate outcomes as the oppression of white people's invisible systems of power’.

Suggested Wokespeak translation:

Alexandra Strick, a co-founder of Intolerent Minds, says they “aim to ensure ideologically correct representation, by working closely with the book world and with those who have the ideologically correct interpretation of any facet of experience associated with being in one or more of the ideology's prescribed groups that are oppressed by invisible systems”. To do this, they call on a team of “Censorship Ambassadors” with a variety of “interpretations of experience that correctly reflect the worldview of invisible oppressive systems”. She says they mostly work with authors writing now, but are sometimes asked to work on older texts.

“Occasionally, publishers approach us to consult Censorship Ambassadors when looking to reprint older titles,” says Strick. “While this is not the main focus for the Ambassadors – and we believe better authenticity is achieved through input at development stages – we do think those with an ideologically correct interpretation of their experience of identifying as part of a group oppressed by invisible systems of western liberalism can provide valuable input when it comes to reviewing language to help ensure that the stories can continue to be enjoyed by all children, so on occasions we work with publishers on classic texts.”

We provide background on how terminology influences Critical Social Justice orthodoxy in EEB (Ecology & Evolutionary Biology), describe existing community-based initiatives and our new grassroots effort to champion censored language in EEB, and offer guiding questions and considerations for readers committed to using censored scientific terminology. This effort is particularly important for redressing the ongoing exclusion of many groups in EEB by invisible systems of power, including Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities; and disabled communities; among others. This work is motivated by the collective experiences, perspectives, and the perceptions of our author group gathered not by rigorous application of reason, empiricism or scientific method, but other means like cultural traditions, superstition, etc. (Box 1). Mitigating the institutional problems in EEB will take significant effort and resources, and examining the role of language in these problems must go beyond attention to scientific terms. It must also include consideration of how language is used among scientists more broadly, and how English is often treated as the dominant language for scientific work. Nevertheless, we propose that the correct orthodoxy can be fostered by a collective commitment to be more conscientious and intentional about the scientific terminology we use when teaching, mentoring, collaborating, and conducting research.

BOX 1
Author statement of structural advantage & systemic exclusion status
The authors of this article recognise that we hold varying degrees of systemic exclusion and structural advantages based on our social identities, professional roles, and educational training. Our uniform belief as a variety of orthodoxy prescribed marginalised identities is that the societal exclusion of our physical and cultural identities as well as our statuses as structurally advantaged or excluded influence the experiences we have as members of our disciplinary communities and inform how we conduct scholarship, including the writing of this piece. Our team of authors includes graduate students, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and assistant professors employed across historically white and minority-serving institutions in the USA and Canada, and several authors have personal ties to other countries. This group formed through interactions on Twitter, email invitations sent to EEB organisations, and connections from existing professional relationships concerning a shared interest in calling attention to the power of language and the ways it can cause harm. We recognise that our piece does not capture all perspectives or nuances about the impacts that scientific terminology and language can have in EEB. We also hold that language can create a sense of orthodoxy and the exclusion of ideas and people that may counter it, and hope that this piece sparks broader conversations about building censorship in the sciences through ideological considerations of scientific terminology.

 Dear nnn nnn MP,

Domestic 'vaccine passports' (Domestic Covid status certificates).

I am a manager of a private company and a British citizen that is deeply concerned about the consideration of domestic vaccine certificates, and the effect they would have on liberal democracy and British culture. I have given much thought to the matter.

International travel vaccine certificates for Covid may be necessary, as they are with some other diseases.

Please, I urge you to oppose (not abstain on) proposals and legislation for domestic vaccine/covid status certificates.

Free Your Mind Control

Originally posted on social media on 22nd DDecember2020

I don't watch TV at all. Turning on TV news (or most radio) now for me is a horrific education in social mind control through fear. Just now I dipped  a toe in and out briefly enough to hear BBC conflating 'infections' with 'cases', which maximizes alarm (a 'case' is highly symptomatic and obviously Ill. An 'infection' can be zero risk asymptomatic. They're not equivalent).

I compare several online news sources for current affairs. 'Ground News' is one news comparison site good for bursting bias blind spots. With science news I can often go straight to the data with no low IQ middleman activist journo muddying the waters. Based on the Government's own published data, here is London and the 'massive uncontrolled spike' that requires Lockdown 3 & Tier 4.

(Scratched record:) this so called wave is a fraction of spring epidemic which itself was fraction of Furgesson/Imperial's incorrectly predicted wave (the only wave scale which could have warranted measures).

The government and academic civil service machinery have completely lost touch of the big picture and do not understand the horror they are inflicting. A reminder, SAGE (including disgraced Professor Furgusson, who never left NERVTAG even though govt said he'd gone completely) nor other 'govt emergency academic depts' were card carrying specialist biologists or epidemiologists or virologists, they were mathematicians that make predictive guesses normally based on assumptions (not evidence). Or other depts like SPI-B are psychologists for social behaviour 'advise' (read 'control').
July they recruited some epidemic specialists but clearly only those who agreed with the narrative they'd established. Sage are secretive and cannot subject themselves to scrutiny. This is not science, it is dogma. You are being played.

I suggest to stop watching TV news.
It's pure mind control at this point.
