Vote on vaccine passes:
Vaccine passes are immoral, I have previously written to you at length about this, and you have reassured me of your opposition.
They cannot pass this law with their own party which is rebelling, they are relying on drawing their mandate from those who should be opposing them, HM opposition.
Your party leader Kier Starmer previously indicated opposition to vaccine passes, but now is appearing to submit and wave through these horrible discriminatory measures introducing apartheid culture to the UK.
I am sick to the stomach of what is happening to our morality, civil liberty and liberal principles.
Last summer I warned you in a previous email that the road out of lockdown and restrictions would negotiate a path that put our liberty in jeopardy,
now we are at the Rubicon.
Labour has the power to dismantle this morally corrupt government's proposal, yet appears to be supporting it.
Please, I suggest, I implore, make the case to your colleagues and your leadership I have outlined several times now.
This is not a partisan issue, it is about civil liberty and the moral principles that hold back tyrannical tendencies of the state and uphold liberal democracy.
In August, PHE told Steve Baker MP that the Infection Fatality Rate for Covid was estimated at 0.096% (src: Parliament/PHE),
which is the same estimate for average seasonal influenza (~0.1% - srcs: CDC, American Lung Association).
We never had vaccine passes for influenza for many reasons, anyone suggesting that we should would have correctly been seen as obsessively anxious to the point of pathology.
But fundamentally its because:
Coerced consent to physical intervention is in the zone of physical abuse.
It is immoral.
All the data from South Africa since its discovery show more clearly by the day the GOOD NEWS that the Omicron variant is yet milder.
Yes it is evidently more transmissible. It is not reasonable to up-end the liberal social contract between the state and the citizen for this reason alone; Influenza and other common but mild/harmless seasonal viruses are also highly transmissible.

It was always predicted that the course of this virus was pretty much certain to evolve into an irritant, as a milder variant spreads more rapidly we build an immunity in the community such that when it returns seasonally at worst it is 'a bad cold'. While there is good reason to be optimistic about the course of the virus, I fear what is happening to our civilization at the hands of our government with the largely supine consent of parliament. Now is the time for you to make the difference to set us on a better moral course to minimise future suffering and maximise well being. I suggest again to talk, persuade, convince your leadership and your colleagues on all sides to VOTE NO TO VACCINE PASSES.

Thank you for your email regarding the votes in Parliament today on “Plan B” measures to control the spread of the new variant of Covid-19, and specifically on the issue of “vaccine passports”.
I think it’s important first of all to be clear that the vote today is not about Vaccine Passports, something I’ve always said I wouldn’t support. This is about asking people who enter large events (classed as over 500 people) and nightclubs to show a negative COVID test result OR proof of vaccination to keep others around them safe. It’s a system that has been operating in Wales for some time, and with evidence clearly showing the Omicron variant to be more transmissible, I think it’s a sensible, proportionate measure.
Throughout the pandemic my Labour colleagues and I have been clear that we will do what is necessary to support the NHS and protect public health. But restrictions must be proportionate and Labour pushed the Government to allow the option of presenting a negative test result as an alternative to a Covid Pass. We also pushed to ensure there would be no requirements for a pass to access essential services.
While I understand concerns about these new measures, it is clear in my view that action needs to be taken to prevent our health systems being overwhelmed by the Omicron variant of Covid-19. While it may well be the case that the new variant is less mild than previous variants – and I very much hope the early data on this proves to be correct - it is now clear that it is significantly more transmissible and the government must act swiftly to limit its spread to ensure the NHS is not overwhelmed in the coming weeks.
We remain far more open as a society than many comparable countries where they face more severe restrictions, and the key to ensuring this continues is doing everything possible to increase vaccinations, with data showing that a booster jab counters the reduced efficacy of the vaccinations when facing the Omicron variant. We’ve consistently called on the Government to do more to supercharge the rollout of the booster programme, and we urgently need to see support for areas of the country where rollout has been low. We’ve also pushed the Government to improve sick pay for workers and take action to keep children in schools, including improved ventilation. More widely, my Labour colleagues and I want a common-sense approach that helps get businesses through the next few months. No one wants to see businesses go under after they have worked so hard to get through the last year. Businesses are telling us they need clarity from the Government, not last minute decisions and vague guidance.
These are issues which we have called for since the start of the pandemic, yet Johnson’s Government seems stuck in an endless cycle of making the same mistakes whilst everyone suffers. The votes today must not distract from these urgently needed measures to prevent any additional restrictions in the coming months.
